Hey guys,
I've had the urge to play this game again recently, and though I own IL2-46 I'm trying to install IL2 from the disc. You see I own the original game, found the CD, and tried installing it just now, but nothing happens. I get the popup asking if I want to run the installation, click yes, and then nothing happens.
I'm running Win7, and I'm the admin. I don't remember having these issues in the past. Can anyone help?

Inside the IL-2 disc you should find the file a.exe(*). Double click it and install the game. Also, you may need to make sure the UAC is disabled. * in case there isn't an 'a.exe' inside there (i own every version of IL-2 plus the expansions plus 1946, so i may be wrong here), there should be another executable that you can use to install the game. Can't remember right now but i'll check it out once i get back home and repot back. Also, to clarify: you own the original disc version of IL-2, the one that was released back in 2001, right?

Hmmm, then i guess this applies only to the 1946 disc version (with which i had problems in the past, possibly because of the DRM they used?); let me check/test my original 2001 version in Win7 and i'll get back to you. ;) edit: Also, is there any particular reason you want to play the first version of IL-2 instead of 1946? For your information, 1946 includes everything from IL-2, Forgotten Battles, Ace Expansion & Pacific Fighters among some extra stuff.

Just tested my copy of the IL-2 Sturmovik (2001's first version) and i couldn't get it to install on my Win7 64bit system. I tried both setup.exe & SetupUbi.exe in all compatibility options and with UAC disabled to no luck, but i was able to actually run the game (without installing it) by clicking the il2.exe which resides into the IL2 folder of the CD. Game started up fine, i was able to change video resolution among the other options, quick battle, training & career seem to work fine (not sure about saving though; make sure to check it out if you intent to play the game without installing it). Also, you can copy all contents of the CD to your HDD for faster file access speed and, consequently, faster loading times. Also, out of curiosity, i tried to install Forgotten Battles and it seems that one installs & plays flawlessly. Neither games (IL-2 & IL-2 Forgotten Battles) seem to support Win7, at least officially. Anyway, your best option as i said in my previous post, is to go with the newer and updated IL-2 1946 which, also, is the only version that can be modded (if you want).
Cheers & have fun!

Cheers & have fun! That's fantastic news. It may be that when I first bought the game I had WinXP (Almost certainly, though I don't remember when the different versions were released. I know I used to use Win2K for a while.) I own Pacific theatre (I forget the official name,) and the complete Il2-'46, and even have a folder of it on my backup drive with a few mods, but I've been wanting to play the original for some time now, and thought I never could, but thankfully I still have the CD! =D

It may be hard to believe, but you had to have played it to know. I miss that feel, and want to play the pure sim again.

Hmmm, i don't remember it having different physics but i haven't played it since the release of Forgotten Battles back in '03 so i can't speak for it with confidence. What i do remember is that IL-2 & FB had some difference in their sound effects, can't remember any details about that though and maybe it was just me.CLBrown

Installing the CD/DVD based IL-2 games is more of a challenge than it ought to be, because there's some OS-specific scripting in the installer routine. But you can get around that easily enough. You see I own the original game, found the CD, and tried installing it just now, but nothing happens. I get the popup asking if I want to run the installation, click yes, and then nothing happens.

For the original IL-2 Sturmovik, if you go to the first CD, you'll find 'autoexec.inf.' ANYTIME you have difficulty with a disk-based program doing what it's supposed to do, check that file first. You can open it with Notepad, by the way... it's a plain text file.
For IL-2 Sturmovik, for Forgotten Battles, for Ace Expansion Pack, and for Pacific Fighters, each Disk #1 'autoexec.inf' file has the file named after the disk start first... and those are small executables which are simply 'loaders.' DO run each of those first (they set up a few registry keys you need, but then crash without providing any feedback). THEN, you can run the file named 'setup.exe.' This is the actual installer routine, and will run perfectly fine on Windows 7 or Windows 8. I haven't tried it on Win10, so I can't say for certain, however.
Always run the first stage first, and then each 'add-on disk set' on top of that, without installing any 'patches.' For example, if you want to install the merged FB+AEP+PF... as I prefer to do... Install Forgotten Battles first, then install the Ace Expansion Pack, then install Pacific Fighters (this disk has TWO installers... but you can tell the right one, as one actually calls itself 'FB+AEP+PF.'
Once your game is in the 'combined state' you want it to be, then, and ONLY THEN, you can run 'updates.' Note, these updates don't actually alter any existing files, but are simply ZIP archives which unzip on top of your existing installation, replacing files entirely or adding new ones.
I'm running Win7x64, and have JUST completed this whole process, by the way. And at present I'm reinstalling my DVD-based 1946 installation.
IL-2 Sturmovik 1946's disk structure is a BIT different. The first file (that does the registry additions, but then crashes) is called 'Setup.exe.' Remember, in the earlier disks, 'setup.exe' was the actual installer, while 'PF.exe' or the like were the 'registry adding' elements. This time, maybe just to confuse things???... they switched this around. For 1946, 'setup.exe' needs to be run, and will seem to stop without having done anything (but will have added your required registry keys). You then need to run 'a.exe,' which is what 'setup.exe' was for the other games... the actual installer.
I have been told, but have not yet seen it happen, that when installing 1946 in this way, some element of installer scripting will delete the 'il2fb.exe' file from your installation when it's completed, even though it gets copied over during installation. If this happens... as several people have pointed out... your game will not run. But you will notice that the il2fb.exe file is present on the first disk, and you can simply copy it over, I've been told, and everything will run fine.
Oleg Maddox's game design is masterful, but his installers were always terrible. Thankfully, GoG and Steam and the like all bypass that, and get you right into the original game... so in these cases, unless you're a 'completist' like I am, I recommend sticking with the Steam/GOG/whatever version instead of the CD versions.
FYI, one last note... the games use a unique form of copy protection... a single DLL file called 'rts.dll.' This DLL handles the CD-check which requires you go have an original copy of the disk in your drive. Each version of the game has its own unique DLL... the first IL-2 has one, Forgotten Battles has another, 'FB-Ace Expansion Pack' has another, and 'Pacific Fighters' has yet another (I assume 1946 has yet another?) The DLL is never replaced in any 'patch' versions, but is specific to the DISK it is checking for. Because of the terrible issues this caused, Ubisoft themselves provided replacement DLLs a few years back to drop in (for each of the above configurations) which would disable the (drastically flawed) 'disk-check' mechanism. In my own case, I was OK with the original game, with Forgotten Battles and Ace Expansion Pack, but the revised version for Pacific Fighters refused to EVER let my game 'verify' the presence of the CD (even though it was right where I'd just installed from!) So I've had to use this solution to make my game work properly, and you very likely will as well, especially if you are running 'Pacific Fighters.'
You can find these files in various places... but Ubisoft no longer hosts them, it seems. Just be careful, because most files you'll find are on 'game copy' sites, and those can be sources of Malware... if you have a 'virtual browser' or the like to download through, I recommend doing so if you go to one of those sites. As it turned out, my own downloads (which came from just such a site) were clean, and were the original versions Ubisoft released... but I can't guarantee you won't find something 'ugly' if you're not careful.

Wonderful guide, thank you. Are those dll's smaller than 512kB? If so, would you mind adding '.jpg' to the end (thus: rts.dll.jpg) and attaching them to a post in here? This is because we may not attach anything but pictures in here.
